Courses in our Sacred Texts Category

Through the ages…

Judaism’s sacred texts are relevant today as much as they were in antiquity. They represent not only an expression of religious precepts but embody also the rich historical, cultural and social heritage of the Jewish people.  Drawing on ancient wisdom from the past, these texts give voice to present concerns and are even evident in Israel’s modern culture.
This section of studies contains classic Jewish texts in their Hebrew and Aramaic originals.
This category of courses contains titles as varied as:
Apocalyptic Literature in Early Judaism and Christianity, History of Judaism, Jewish Mysticism and its Formative Traditions, Midrash: Classic Rabbinic Biblical Interpretation, The Rabbininc Midrash Collection Sifra, Defining Jewish Distinction- an Exploration of Jewish Philosophy and Wisdom in ancient Judaism.
We of course are met with studies in The Tanakh, an acronym of the three sets of books which comprise it: the Pentateuch (Torah), the Prophets (Nevi’im) and the Writings (Ketuvim).
Additionally, students can study the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Septuagint and there are several courses contrasting  Early Christian texts with Judaic texts.
We meet also Mishna and the Talmud and the Midrash (pl. midrashim).

Two paths of arbitership explored

Jewish codes and laws and the light they shed on Jewish history are of course also studied.
We learn of two paths ot genres of “arbitership”: responsa ( the layperson’s queries to rabbis) and formal codification.  Each one seeks to refine the Talmudic eclectic into lucid rules for religious and civil conduct, coupled with inspirational and moral messages.
Finally, esoteric aspects of Judaism are studied in courses dealing with Kabbalistic writings and many of these courses follow the history of the Jews from their expulsion from Spain (1492) to their migration into to Italy, Northern Africa, Turkey, and the Land of Israel.
Many of our students belong to educational institutions dedicated to studying these texts and courses available. There are opportunities to join as a worldwide learner into courses that have the “double track” options- i.e, that  welcome independent learners into their established classes.
Students will also be able to find courses that follow a modular progression for credit with individual universities and other teaching institutions.
