Courses in our Modern Literature Category

The all pervasive nature of Jewish influence

The boundaries and limitations of Jewish modern literature are very hard to find! They exist only in demarcations thought up by librarians for categorising purposes, that perhaps give entitlement to categorise by time period, by
geographical or ethnic or cultural or religious history of the surrounding context.
What connects however is the Jewish experience. For what we find in Jewish Liteerature, are works from time periods and in languages (Yiddish, English, French, German, Italian, Ladino, Russian ) that take us through journeys of Jewish culture and contexts in all of History’s crossroads.
Our Modern Literature courses take us through a study of eighteenth and nineteenth century  intellectual and religious transitions such as the Enlightenment, Jewish Mysticism, Zionism, and Socialism and Capitalism.
The range of writers and works are understandably wide and range from the Russian poet Osip Mandelstam, Mendele Moykher-Sforim’s The Travels of Benjamin III(1878), Ze’ev Vladimir Jabotinsky( founder of the Revisionist movement of Zionism, whose name is synonymous with Jewish nationalism) Franz Kafka, Beck’s Primo Levi, Ida Fink, Ava Schieber, Philip Roth, Amos Oz, David Avidan, A. B. Yehoshua, Aharon Appelfeld, Etgar Keret.
A sampling of our courses include:
Jewish Identity in Modern Jewish Literature, Jewish American Literature and Culture, Heroism in Modern Jewish Literature Messianic Themes and Mysticism in Modern Jewish Literature, Journey in Stereotypes in Modern Jewish Society,
Tales of Independent Jewish Women in Contemporary New York,  Journeys into Memories of Relations Past – a Study in Talmudic Precepts Paralleled with Contemporary Jewish Societies,  Rites and Passages of Young Jewish Men in Postmodern Society.

The Modern Jewish Canon?

A book that is highly recommended as a backbone to almost all of our Modern Literature courses is – The Modern Jewish Canon – A Journey Through Language and Culture, By Ruth R. Wisse. It explains the all encompassing nature of Jewish Modern Literature very well:
“This book tries to explain the phenomenon of a multilingual Jewish literature through a discussion of some of its greatest works of the twentieth century. There will obviously be some tension between classifying a given piece of writing as an example of Jewish literature and designating it as a work in a non-Jewish language that has a strong national tradition of its own. A multilingual Jewish literature violates, on the one hand, the concept of a national literature in a national language and, on the other, the traditional Jewish concept of a received literature that alone requires ongoing interpretation. It will satisfy neither the traditionalist who likes clean boundaries nor the postmodernist who doesn’t believe in boundaries. Modern literature reflects the decline of religious faith, the disintegration of cohesive communities, the weakening of ethnic ties — a centrifugal process that is reflected most obviously in the many languages that Jews have come to speak. Yet just as there exists a modern Jewish people, so too does a modern Jewish  literature exist, and I hope to show that the difficulty of defining them does not lessen their actuality.”
Many of our students belong to educational institutions dedicated to studying these texts and courses available.
There are opportunities to join as a worldwide learner into courses that have the “double track” options- i.e, that welcome independent learners into their established classes.
Students will also be able to find courses that follow a modular progression for credit with individual universities and other teaching institutions.
There are also, for some select universities, undergraduate and graduate degree progressions available for students, involving parallel studies with History, Culture and Thought and Voices of Israel Categories.
