The collective learning of the Jewish people…

Jewish philosophy is something that is very hard to define. It encompasses texts, traditions and experiences of the Jewish people and more specifically the texts, traditions and experiences of Judaism.
We come across the very palpable idea that Judaism has an identifiable and definable essence, specific to the spirit of its people and prophets.
Interestingly however, often non-Jewish philosphers are also cited among the body of literature.
Emil Fackenheim is among those who have put forward that Jewish philosophy is a combination of an essential Jewish message with a more general philosophical method.  The message being the ethical writings of the classical prophets of ancient Israel,  but that the method is that of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.

Existential questions beg answers…

As with all philosophical endeavours, Jewish Philosophy seeks the answers to questions such as:
What is the nature of God? How do we know that God exists?
How can one reconcile the findings of philosophy with religion?
How can one reconcile the findings of science with religion?
These courses introduce us to Jewish philosophers from ancient times to modern day thinkers. These names are especially notable:
Philo of Alexandria (20 B.C. – A.D. 40) who was born in Alexandria, Egypt. He attempted to align the wisdom of the Ancient Greek philosophers
with his Jewish religious belief. Jesus of Nazareth (c. 7 B.C. – A.D. 26)- the Christ of Christianity.
Saadia Gaon (892 – 942) who wrote the Book of the Articles of Faith and Doctrines of Dogma which was the first systematic presentation and philosophic foundation of the dogmas of Judaism.
Solomon Ibn Gabirol (Avicebron) (1021 – 1058) who was a Spanish-Jewish poet-philosopher. He had a considerable influence on medieval Christianity,
including influencing Albertus Magnus and St. Thomas Aquinas.
Among 20th-century thinkers, Martin Buber and Abraham Joshua Heschel are notable.
