These courses delve into the beginnings, and outcomes of the holocaust, tracing the history of the holocaust from its inception in pre-war Germany, visiting the political climate and emerging ideologies of the time.

We learn how Germany became a totalitarian regime and how the rest of the world responded or failed to respond to the signs; how the National Socialist Party came to power; how key practices of Nazi Germany created unique realities in its
occupied countries; how the terrible Final Solution played out; how countries, societies and leaders reacted to the consistent policy of dispossession and discrimination under Nazi rule.

Realities and questions

Lessons of history – morality, ethics and consequences of the holocaust pervade these courses which bring a very rich offering of texts and films.

These resources encourage students to interpret and reflect upon the many profound questions raised by the Nazi genocide of the Jewish people.
Historical memory and collective memory are represented and explored.

Prominent scholars such as Elie Wiesel are studied. Emergent realities and their intrinsic questions are considered, such as the one that Elie Wiesel pointed out – which says that at Auschwitz not only man died but also the idea of man. How then how do we now conceive of the human? How could political barbarism rise to the surface and not be countered by the powers that be or by high ideologies in civilised nations ( inherent in art, intellect, religion)?
